Ran the Wood River yesterday from Camp Lonesome to the Broad. Tide was on the ebb. Transit time was 5.5 hours. Water flow stopped about 2 miles from the exit. The last couple of hours were challenging. I actually think that the low water helped in that the overhead challenges seemed to be worse than the underwater challenges. I think there might have been a couple of show-stoppers at high water. As it was we made it through without…

I was in a 15' canoe and my wife in a 16.5' kayak.

Ann at the completion of the battle....the picture does not do it justice. Her cockpit was completely full of leaves, twigs, muck. Love it!

I am paddling down to ENP from Cape Coral the middle of october for a couple of weeks and wanted to know if anyone could give me some info on the self registration process. I normally do this trip every year in the middle of the winter. I know the price of the permit and campsite fees. What I want to know is if you have to pay these fees this time of the year. Someone told me that in the summer you have to register but you do not have to pay the fees. Is this true?

Hello Explorers,

My name is Jason Jones, and I’m the newest addition to this group. First, I’d like to thank Keith for taking the initiative to put this site together, and second I’d like to thank everyone else who has participated in the past to build up such an amazing collection of original information on the specific topic of manpowered exploration of the ENP.

I’m 30, a 5th generation Floridian, and I was born and raised in Port Charlotte. I have been kayaking since 2009, but only Charlotte/Sarasota/Manatee/Lee counties. For the last few years I had been living abroad, but I decided to return because I just missed kayaking and being alone on the FL waters without engines or artificial noise pollution. Peace and quiet has become a rare commodity these days.

In addition to kayaking and exploring the waterways of southwest Florida, I also enjoy backcountry hiking, especially to places with historical folk lore attached. Learning the history of the area helps me to better appreciate my own ancestors. It also helps me picture what these areas looked like when their use and vegetation were different. I’m interested in everything from the geology and how it was formed to the Indians that inhabited the area thousands of years ago.

My interest in the Everglades has been growing for years, but only through indirect research. I now have all the books (Totch, Dredgeman of Cape Sable, River of Grass, The Swamp…), have visited all the websites (Everglades Diary, KayakFari… thanks again Keith and Flex!), watched the YouTube videos (this is my favorite https://www.youtube.com/user/mechanicmike69), etc, etc, etc. I’m working extra jobs to buy a 16-18-foot touring sea kayak by Sept so that I can start practicing in it—right now I have 13-foot hybrid fishing kayak.

I’ve been building out a GoogleMap with routes, notes, and markers in my free time. I will keep adding to it in the weeks and months to come as I prepare for a through trip (Everglades City to Flamingo or vice versa) this winter. Feel free to check it out (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1gAS5Nc5AtMuwdF4beDj9ESihhr4&usp=sharing). Like I said, I’ll keeping adding more campsites and routes to it. Plus, I’ll add the mileage to the route names to make it easier to plan.

I do have many questions, but I will continue to read through the forum before asking anything so that I’m not making you guys repeat yourselves. Thank you again for building this amazing resource, and I look forward to contributing as well. As a person who enjoys being alone and values independence (probably too much), it is good to see that as a group we really can accomplish more than any of us on our own. Kudos.

I'm a third-generation Miami native, lifelong outdoorsman, and former Army officer/Iraq vet. I've canoed across much of ENP (pretty much all of the paddling trails south of Shark River), BNP, and Biscayne Bay, and trekked many times along the Florida Trail south of I-75. In fact, when I got married in 2010, my bachelor "party" was a hike through Roberts Lake Strand (to the dismay of my groomsmen, who were secretly hoping I had hid some strippers at the ground site near Roberts…

Late last month, my younger brother and I spent four days looping around Whitewater Bay in a 17 foot Grumman, from Coot Bay Pond to Joe River up to Cormorant Pass (with a detour through the Labyrinth to avoid rough water) to the Cutoff and then down Roberts River and out. We had to cross some rough water a few times in the Bay and I burned out my shoulder in the process. Looks like tendinitis, so could be worse, but still not fun. Clearly my mind has not come to terms with the fact that my body is hitting middle-age. At least it is late in the season.

Now, I'm interested in tackling the backcountry. I'm planning a trip across Shark River Slough from L-67 to Canepatch for next year, water levels permitting. I might even try it with a sailing rig if I can save up the funds.

I've also mapped out a very ambitious 130-mile route through the Miami-Dade canal system, from Oleta to the Miami River, then weaving from the Bay west to C-111, ending at the terminus of the Southern Glades Trail. I'd like to tackle that as a series of day trips once I get a solo kayak. (I'm in the market, particularly if anyone is looking for a trade!)

Recently, I've been getting very interested in kayak camping. I do a lot of fishing out of my yak (a WS Ride 115) and am beginning to do expand out to overnight camping/fishing trips. I started reading up on trips to the Everglades and wound up on the EEN, which has been a great resource. I think I found it via the Everglades Diary blog, which was another great site to look at.

I'm looking to do my first solo camping/fishing trip out to Tiger Key in mid-December and signed up to get some advice from people and join the conversation. If you've got some advice for a new-comer, please chime in on my post in the Exploring the Everglades forum about 1st time trips.Cheers!

Hi my name is Scott Baste. I own a paddleboard/kayak rental/retail shop in Tavernier, FL. (PADDLE! the Florida Keys) I mostly explore via stand up paddleboard. I have all my gear and am getting ready to leave on 11/20 from Flamingo and go outside to the cape and back through Shark River, Joe River, etc. I'm planning on camping at NW Cape and South Joe. I'm planning on adjusting the route based upon the predicted weather and conditions. Anyone want to come along? I'm planning on shoving off around 9 am Friday morning. approx 20 miles to NW cape and then 15 or so on second day and then 15 or so to finish up on Sunday.
