I wish somebody would unclog the upstairs drain and let the bathtub water out because it may come crashing down one day soon from the extra weight and I hope nobody is underneath. The roof has been leaking and the upstairs bathroom floor is already gone, the cast iron tub hanging by the pipes. Im not sure if the bathroom is part of the planned preservation thus the neglect. They may have originally had an outhouse .Maybe someone could organize a volunteer group?

I lived behind Monroe Station 2 years ago for my work but it may be too dangerous now to enter the building. The only small mammals I saw in 4 1/2 months was a stray black cat that lives under the crawl space that came out every night like clockwork and one marsh rabbit that eventually fell prey. But I enjoyed my time there and thanks to the NPS for allowing me to live on site.
#31b) Weaver's Station Across…tag:gladesgodeep.ning.com,2014-07-25:2541133:Comment:634532014-07-25T14:25:22.326Zshawn beightolhttp://gladesgodeep.ning.com/profile/shawnbeightol

This station is one of the last remaining stations still in existence and is still in operation as a gas station to serve the
public, just as it was when it was built in 1928 by Barron
Collier

Paolita Station, along with Monroe, Weavers, Turner River, Royal Palm Hammock and Belle Meade were roadside motorcycle police sub-stations set-up along the Tamiami Trail soon after it was completed in 1928. The first floor was a gas station, rest stop, and diner for travelers along the trail, with the second floor being for the policeman and his wife, who ran the diner.

The officers of each station were part of the now-defunct Southwest Mounted Police. Each one patrolled the Trail on motorcycle 5 miles east and west of their station.

Today only Monroe and Royal Palm Hammock Station remain intact, with two outbuildings left at the site of Weavers Station.

Belle Meade was reportedly moved to Everglades City and used as a house. Paolita and Turner River Stations are gone forever.

The establishment of the Southwest Florida Mounted Police was an integral part of the creation of the six stations along the Tamiami Trail in Collier County. Husband-and-wife teams were hired to manage the stations, selling food, drinks, and gasoline to motorists, with the husband also “deputed by the county sheriff” ostensibly “not so much [to] arrest lawbreakers as to aid motorists in difficulty,” but the remoteness of the station locations still resulted in tense

confrontations.17
It was expected that once an hour during daylight hours, each officer would mount his Harley Davidson motorcycle and patrol the fives miles of roadway to either side of each station.18
William Irwin was the first officer to occupy Monroe Station. Beginning in November 1928, he worked out of the station and was presumably accompanied by his wife, Nettie, and two children.19
Officer Irwin‟s tenure was short. He was killed on January 19, 1929, in a head-on collision while patrolling on his
motorcycle.20 "

the 6 stations were "built at ten-mile intervals, Dade County line to Belle Meade.
I think, when you measure the distance between those places, its more like 15-20 mile intervals, which makes more sense.

Here's a story about airboating with the legendary Sig Walker out of the (closed) trail that bears his name.

For those interested, there is a mechanism functioning for now that can be used to lobby the opening of some of these trails that have been closed. From what I have read, the Sig Walker Landing was supposed to be opened. The mechanism is the ORV Advisory Council and is open to the public (the 2014 meeting remaining is 2014 Meeting Calendar: Meetings are from 3:30 to 8:00 pm on the following dates: * Tuesday, October 7

- All meetings will be held at:
Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center
33000 Tamiami Trail East
Ochopee, FL 34141 ).

I will be attending to try to lobby to have Monroe South extended to the "Burkhold Trail" that Dale, Chris, Tony and I have used (its like a superhighway through the Cypress) and then across New River extend Skillet ORV south so a loop path would be provided with a canoe/kayak/bicycle launch/parking area at the River. I will also add my voice to the call for the Sig Walker Airboat Trail to be opened that I just hiked with Tom, Albert and will hike again August 2, 7-9.
