That being said,
there used to be

Interesting...is there any evidence of old equipment? We have a railroad up here abandoned nearly 100 years ago and you can ferret among old switches and logging cars and wheels.

Not at that site, but nearby ... some of it is in museums (what they didn't scrap).  I found an old engine in a break in a tram once.  I didn't know what it was until somebody told me.  I just plunked it back in the water.  I could probably still find it there because its a hard spot to get to.

Deep Lake is an amazing place with some history dating back to before the Civil War. Its the deepest lake in the state of Florida. Rumor says its so deep that saltwater fish like Tarpon have entered from underground.  I would imagine its fenced off now.

There's a trail you can hike to it.  Also that ditch which connects to the canal.  The canal (at that spot) is fenced off, but you can get to the canal through the same property from which the trail head to the lake is.  It's almost 100 ft deep and only 250 feet across.

I thought it was deeper.   OK thanks. I will check it out on Google Earth.  I read some cool books at the library about the history.

The ditch to the canal is probably how the Tarpon got in. I dont know if they are still there. Here is a brief mention of Deep Lake I found online.  Paradise Lost  http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2002-02-18/lifestyle/0202150834_1_...

I had heard that runaway slaves worked the Orange and Grapefruit groves at Deep Lake.
