Maybe this is old news but they had a pretty serious fire on the south side of Avocado Creek
from Tarpon Bay to Canepatch. It was stopped by the mangroves and Avocado Creek.
I didn't see it when did my Shark River Slough trip in October because I arrived at Canepatch
after dark and left Canepatch before light. I saw it when I was in there over the Thanksgiving
weekend.
It really opened up the area south of Avocado Creek, a perfect time to explore south of the
creek toward Watson River. Would that be unbelievable to come up from Watson River to
Canepatch.

There was no evidence of fire that I could see when I left Cane Patch on the morning of Nov. 12. When I was driving up the Park road south of Mahogany Hammock on the way into Homestead on Friday afternoon of the 14th there was a big wall of smoke rising across the horizon to the northwest. I first thought they might be doing controlled burns in the Big Cypress, but it's the wrong time of year for that, and it looked to be a lot closer than the BCNP. I'm guessing that I saw the fire you're talking about, in progress.

Maybe it was the ghost of Totch Brown, firing the prairies like they used to do in the old days... :-)
