Its amazing how black the dirt is under those Pond Apples. Its the same black dirt immediately south of Lake Okeechobee where a huge Pond Apple slough was lost to farmland.
Are pond apple and custard apple the same thing?
Probably not. But I have heard old timers talk about making Custard Apple Pie from Pond Apples. I have heard Custard Apple and Pond Apple commonly used to describe the same tree but Custard Apple may in reality be a different fruit in the same Annona family. Good question. I like Atemoya and Cherimoya also in the same family.
I think Pond Apples drop in September. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annona_glabra
