It's interesting, I was out today in the Bear Island Unit. I expected boggy, buggy, steamy conditions. And of the three all I got was steamy...

It was HOT and HUMID, but...the bugs were manageble and the water levels were surprisingly low. I was able to navigate the ridge trail without having to get into 4x4 (sorry for the inclusion of non-human powered descriptors). There are usually several nasty soupy bogs along the way.

I always thought that early august was high water time, but I imagine the evaporation from the heat is compensating for all the rain. It just ain't there. The gators were crowded into what little water was left in the holes. If we don't get a few good downpours, January is going to be like the sahara out there.

i was on the water a lot the past two weeks, and the water levels were very high (and it was definitely rainwater). so i am guessing the water where you were should be high... i'm surprised to hear water levels being low anywhere... maybe robert could shed some light?

I towed my little Scotty camper out to Monroe Station last Wednesday. There were no bugs. Not a single mosquito.  It was hot and I wasnt sure if I had the key or permission to turn on the electric. The steamy heat gave me a headache and I was soaking wet from rain and sweat.  Im getting older and maybe I just cant take it anymore. I had to go jump in the canal to cool down.

Maybe its the new culverts? There was good water flowing on the Loop Road.

ixnay on the osquitosmay... it keeps people away... the mosquitoes are terrible everywhere i go!!!
