Roads change things – the main road inside Everglades National Park.

Roads connect people and places, but they also divide landscapes and wildlife habitats.

It’s only in the last 100 years or so that there have been roads in the Everglades. The main Park road inside Everglades National Park is one of the oldest and originally started out as the Ingraham Highway in 1920s. It was the first time one could drive all the way down to Flamingo to the shores of Florida Bay. Today it slices through about 40 miles of varied habitats mainly of Pine rocklands, Everglades slough, dwarf cypress and coastal mangroves.  The Park road also allows visitors to see, enjoy and explore more of Everglades National Park!
