<p>Daniel, you may have heard of this book, "The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida and the Politics of Paridise" by Michael Grundwald. Very interesting read that connects the people, government and the Everglades in the battle to 'tame the wild'. it covers about 100 years of battle between the swamp, the indians and US Corp trying to drain the glades to "create something useful" out of that "bottomland swamp'. They discuss how developers got land grants to drain and develop the land.</p>
