Everglades Exploration Network

Hi,

It's Sunday, a week from today we will be on water!  Still planning a 5n/6d Chatham R loop, with one layover day...right now we are pavilion, mormon, mormon, watson, crooked creek if we get our way.  I have learned much from this group; thanks to all for the generous sharing of your knowledge.  While I may follow the yellow brick road, i wont be followin' no magenta line...

I had the idea of making Crooked Creek our layover night instead of Mormon, which would give us the option of returning to port a day early if we needed to for whatever reason, or to do a day trip from there and stay a 2nd night.  I saw a Barnes Creek, but couldn't find any info on it...we could head up toward the Turner River area....any suggestions? or is Plan A better, with a day trip out of Mormon?

Would stuff left on a chickee all day while we were gone be safe? obviously no guarantees...

In general, if you are exploring up some of the back water creeks, how much danger is there of being stranded by a dropping tide?

You cannot stay at crooked creek two nights. Lopez is your next bet but that is way too close to the boat launch.  Mormon or Rabbit Key would be preferable.

thanks  vivian,

Mormon it is...

I like Mormon too.. as the day paddles can be anywhere you want..tides and winds willing. Rabbit actually has more island circumference but beware where you camp..on the NE there are long mud flats at low tide.

I can't think of any chickee anywhere that allows two nights camping. Just as well. Chickees are used as restroom stops by the public during the day and if the wind comes up and takes your tent..it is nice to know about it right away.

This January, the wind was blowing about out of the north at 15-25 mph on the Hells Bay Chickee, so we used short 4 foot sections of chord tied to the corner tent stake loops and looped them through the boards. Then bent coat hanger, pushed it between the boards to grab and rertrive the line hanging under the deck. Then tied it to the deck boards. The coat hanger is critical on the interior boards.

hi Kim,

would you prefer to stay at the Crooked Creek chickee or Lopez R camp site?

Haven't been to Crooked Creek. Have been to Lopez three times. Crooked Creek was just erected. Lopez always got crowded when people could not get to Sunday Bay. Lopez is not a huge campsite but bigger than a chickee.

Haven't got an answer about comparisons of bugs.
