I've been wanting to do this for a couple years. Last week I had a meeting at ENP Homestead HQ and decided to do it:
There's a road leading west across the canal behind the Homestead General Aviation Airport - SW 288 St. It runs 6.2 miles west from the canal/levee and then makes a 90 degree turn south as SW 287 Ave. This runs 2 miles south before dead-ending just outside ENP boundary. Its part of the path I was hoping to include in my spring break 2015 bike ride ( ).
The hike from the main road to the dead-end of SW 287th Ave is 4 miles over (what I know now) rough solution hole (karst topography) terrain. Certain ankle spraining, leg-breaking, arm-busting territory.
I parked at what I think was access road 6 or 9 (see the GE for map), then hiked south 1 mile before turning 30 degree (NNE). The hike over karst terrain was 3 miles. Then hiked back.
Plenty of drinking water along the way if you bring a filter. I keep forgetting its summer...

North to the Left. Of course, when I told David Denham of FTA this, he said "yeah, I did that in the 70s dragging my bike so I could ride all the way out." WTF!
This image shows my start point (more to the east), when I turned on my GPS track. I rested at the base of the road, had lunch, then tried a bit more West on the return, hoping to see better ground than karst/solution holes. Didn't.
I'd like to do it again but set out right from the gate at about 35-40 degrees to save a bit and maybe find a track to take the bikes. I know Terry will say "no" to that...but what if they're being walked? Sure can't ride over this moonscape.
