There was a report after Isaac that The Nightmare was impassible.  Anyone have an update on the trail status?  Thanks much.  Jay

Just got back from a trip.  Passed through The Nightmare on 12/2.  There are 3 or 4 fresh (Isaac) live-fall that make the trail look impassible - but you can get through. The worse was approaching the exit/entrance to the Broad River. I think it would be smart to make a very small hole so that it doesn't look so foreboding.  I was able to make it through without cutting or breaking anything (except what my canoe might have broken).  I would hate to see some less experienced paddler take a look at it and choose to bail out to the Gulf into what might be marginal or dangerous conditions and get themselves in trouble.  I have already seen a couple of postings where people have bailed to the creek.

Over time as people make it through it will open up a bit.

Good on you, Jay. We were a couple of days behind you, passing Broad Creek and the Nightmare on 12/4 with no problems either place. We entered Nightmare from the south about 1500, almost 3 hours before a high tide of 3 or 3.5 feet and experienced no delays in a couple of 17'9" decked canoes. You're right, that single spot on the north end looks completely blocked but is passable without further breakage. Wish we had run into you, but glad you got your dose of solitude. Cheers, Jim.
