I was wondering if anyone knew the status of the East River down to Fakahatchee Bay.  I would also be interested in the status of the Faka Union River post Hurricane Irma or where I'd find that info.  We are thinking about planning a trip down there in 2 canoes and a kayak all around 17' long.  Thanks!

I have not been down the East River since Irma. I do know that the volunteers from Fakahatchee Strand cleared the trail down to the first big lake on an outing soon after the storm.

I am certain that section is well cleared by now as it is a favorite destination for the guided paddle trips.

The Faka Union canal is wide open. The backwater route from the Tamiami down to the top of the Fakhatchee River was a nightmare before the storm... I expect it might be impassable now.

Why don't you call the Ivey House and ask them? They run guided kayak trips down the local rivers all the time - I'm sure they know the trail conditions. You might have to pretend you are willing to hire out though?

Please report what you find out!

From what I've heard East River is clear and passable via Adventure Paddle Tours. They have a permit to operate tours there, cheers!

Out of curiosity I checked out the river last week and it is possible to get down to Daniels Point.

But...

Do not be fooled by the upper stretches! The eco-tour folks have cleared the upper part with chainsaws to the point it is almost an open tunnel. However, once below the second smaller pond the clearing stops. I'm guessing most tours are only for a few hours so most do not go all the way down.

Once below the second small lake, where the creek widens and quickens, and where it used to be the easiest to paddle, is still full of huricane obstacles. Lots of pencil size branches sticking up out of the water, which are not horrible. It is the large fallen tree trunks that are right above the water surface that make it tough.

Be prepared to stand outside your boat and drag it over a few!
