Everglades Exploration Network

Here are links to a couple of articles about crossing the Shark River Slough that are available on the Internet. The first details a crossing led by BCNP Ranger Tony Pernas: There's no coasting when canoeing the Everglades.

The second is an excerpt from W. Hodding Carter's book, Stolen Water (highly recommended!): Without A Paddle

This is the article that got me in touch with Tony Pernas:

Called him to address some of the questions I've seen on this site...when do you do Shark...what boats do you use...where do you sleep...how do you get through to the rookery...

Next thing I know, I'm not doing the shark on my own...I'm doing the Taylor with Tony & his crew. Depending on how you look at this, this is either a good thing or a bad one. Tony's trips are not for the faint of heart or the couch vegetables. But one thing for sure...it's the ultimnate off the trailmap adventure!

Tony Pernas is the master of everglades deep exploration!
I've seen this article before but lost track of it and I'm glad to see it here. I just finished paddling a 7-day trip with Alan Coulter and his wife, two of the nicest people I've ever met and it was a privilege to travel with them. He's back with Outward Bound in Everglades City until the end of January, and will head down to work in Chile after that until the end of March.

I had a couple of email exchanges with Tony back when I was first planning my slough trip in '06. He had just finished making a trip across the entire Everglades watershed from the Miami River through Okeechobee and up the Kissimmee chain of lakes to Orlando. I want to contact him to let him know I was able to get my Glades skiff built and make the trip the way the old-timers did it. Do you know if he still has the same nps.gov email address?
