You can find many fallen trees after hurricanes. Many of these large fallen trees are still alive especially if they hit another tree and get halfway hung up. I search out the large ones because I like to climb up on them and sit during hunting season.  These make some of my favorite tree stands. I have observed much wildlife sitting quietly on top of large fallen cypress trees.

 

 

In your case the tree was probablky damaged in a hurricane but took several years before it fell.

I think your right.  Good point too about them staying alive long after the initial hit.
