Everglades Exploration Network

Allison and I are getting ready for our third Christmas in the mangroves Just to make everyone jealous 12 NIGHTS!. I was down loading tide charts from the NOAA site and  Christmas Day, the day we are planning to do The Lost Portage, the tide will be dropping through the day. Well we had been planning on doing The Lost Portage since we finished our last trip. The tide is going to be low all the places I'm planning on exploring this year. This was just too much. SOLUTION. Don't tell Allison about the low tide. PROBLEM SOLVED. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. If any one needs advice on relationships, navigating, or mud I'm your man.

Oh yeah, one other thing. Allison pointed out to me that the tide chart based on Onion Key and Whitewater Bay only show 9 inches between extreme high and extreme low. On Christmas Day the difference between high and low is 4". (Chatham River Entrance shows up to 4 1/2 feet.)

Oh yeah again. I asked last March and Terry replied that the Last Portage is affected by seasonal water more than by the tides so the tide isn't even an issue.

NEVER THE LESS it is at your own peril to let your paddling partner see the tide chart. Just a friendly warning.

Don't forget to factor in tidal delays.  Low inland is later than low in WW bay or Onion Key.  Nevertheless the four inches ought to be a blessing for timing!

We are also leaving on Christmas Day and wanted to do the lost portage as well this year. Still working out details and if we indeed go for it, might see you out there along the way. Are you looping around back to flamingo or continuing to everglades city?

We are leaving EC on the 19th and finishing at EC on the 31st. Maybe we will run in to you.

We are leaving flamingo on the 25th and returning to flamingo January 4th. Hopefully we will run into you guys in the middle :-)

That would be great. We plan on Canepatch on the 25th, Graveyard on the 26th, Highland on the 27th and Rogers on the 28th.
