Everglades Exploration Network

Hi all,

Friends are camped on East Cape tonite (Wed 3/13/) with daunting winds forecast on the outside.

Does anyone know if there's a paddleable inside route open to Flamingo via Bear Lake Canoe Trail? I don't know what's been cleared since Hurricane Irma.

Please email ASAP fishwitz@yahoo.com or text 305-525-0743

I tried Homestead Canal last year after Irma from both ends (Buttonwood and Bear Lake) but was forced to turn around eventually within sight of the bend (mound) .. there were just too many deadfalls and obstacles, ran out of time! Actually the two trips prompted this lil bit:

The only part that would have been "cleared" was the Homestead Canal with a lot of work done by Tom Rahill and the SwampApes last decade, the rest will depend more on water levels to make it across the Raulerson Prairies!

Last month spoke with a Ranger in Flamingo, he said it took a lot of effort but he made it through the canal. Also I know of someone who made it up into the Fox Lakes just recently via same route!
