We usually see it on the outer keys of the 10,000 islands area. It has green or brown pods covered in spikes. The vine also has thorns on it. I was wondering if anyone knew the real name of this plant/vine. For fun we call it death plant.
We used to call them burning beans when I was a kid. If you get the grey beans from the pod & rub the black dot on the sidewalk, it gets real hot. Touch it to someone's bare skin...& you can give them a blister!
We thought it was a blast & was one of the perqs from the annual trip to the environmental ed center in Crandon Park. Now it would probably be called bullying & be grounds for expulsion!
Gray Nickerbean - Caesalpinia Bonduc
It's one of the host plants for the endangered Miami Blue butterfly.
The Nickerbean is part of a group of collectable seeds called "Seabeans"
Yellow Nickerbeans can be found in the Keys. Another beautiful and collectable "Seabean" seed.
