Everglades Exploration Network

Hi all,

A friend and I are planning to spend 5 or 6 days in Florida Bay starting at Flamingo, crossing Florida Bay to Long Key, back up to Rabbit Key, across to North Nest and back to Flamingo via Shark Point. I will have my kayak but my friend needs to rent one. He has a P&H Cetus so is looking for something around the same size 17' to 18', with 3 hatches and plenty of storage. We will be driving down from Sarasota so could pick up something along the way between Sarasota and Flamingo. Does anyone know of anywhere I can rent that type of kayak in that area ?

My plan B will be to start in Key Largo and rent one from Florida Bay Outfitters and spend the first and last night at North Nest Key. I would rather start at Flamingo, spend the first night at Johnson Chickee and continue on the Long Key. That way the second day will be shorter, rather than paddling from North nest to Shark Point or Rabbit Key.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Dave

Hi Dave, I just put up an article on paddling Florida Bay:  http://kayakfari.wordpress.com/2014/06/03/6188/

Are you about to do it now in the summertime? Keep an eye out on the PM thunderstorms - be safe!!

In the story you'll find links to all the points you mentioned.

That's gonna be an awesome trip, have a great time!

Hey Flex, Great article. I am not going till winter but these things take time to organize !!

I had already checked out your trip from Flamingo to Long Key and thats what convinced my friend to join me, so thanks !

All your pics are really unique and I have enjoyed reading your articles since my first Everglades trip a few years ago. I will be moving to Sarasota permanently in a couple of years so hope to really get down there to do some more "off the beaten path" exploring.
