Got a light tackle spinning rod and a fly rod that I'm looking to carry on my kayak. Piddled around with the fly rod on some soccer fields. NEVER fly fished before. Not particularly adept, to put it mildly.

Any suggestions on fly fishing out of a kayak in general, and any tips to make it work better.

If you are able to stand in your kayak, that will make it much easier. If you are unable to stand, there are a couple of things that make fly casting a bit easier. 1. Use a longer rod (say 10 ft.). 2. Overline by 1 size fly line (ex. put a 9 weight line on an 8 weight rod). Both of these will allow you to load the rod faster and get your casting distance up a bit. Line management can be a bit of a pain in the kayak as well. I use a slightliy wet towel on my lap to keep the line away from snags on my Kayak's deck when needed.
You can increase the stability of your kayak with this:

I have never tried them so can't recommend them.

Yes I can stand in my Kayak it was design for Fly Fishing.
I have a Native....
I use a Native as well. Watch out for the foot pegs, they can easily snag an errant fly line. My next suggestion would be to get some type of casting instruction. Most areas have a fly fishing club that offer cheap or free casting clinics. Trying to teach yourself to flycast is difficult, and often leads to errors in your casting stroke. Let someone who knows what to look for watch you cast, and help you fix your flaws.
My kayak is an Old Town Vapor. While I could probably stand in it, the stiffness of my back will preclude that from happening.
I have yet to have seen any fly fishing instruction that was near where I live. The closest that I'm aware of is a 2-3 hour drive away. That is probably the route I will take though.
Where are you located Wayne?
O.K.
I have more time to repond now. On the Fly fishing task try to pratice sitting down away from water.
On a street maybe. There are few good lessions on you tube with basic, and expert steps. Also there is a guy that Fly Fishing sitting down, and does great on Youtube. I don't have time myself to go to classes, or clubs.

Chris has a good point on form, and having someone help. I notice tend to have issues here also.
I used to have sit on top kayak, and did lots of fishing on it, and produce lots of great fish. No big deal if you have a sit on top I had one for over five years, and ran it all over the Everglades.

Let me know when you are in my neck of the woods, and we can go out to do some fishing. At present it kind of up in the air due to the strange weather, and the fish kill.. I myself have been doing more Black Drum, and Tarpon in the back country, and Sea trout,Drums, Red's, Jacks, Sharks on the front side. Snook??? They need to rest for now.

Chris update your photos I would love to see some of your trips into the Glades.
